Winemaking: This natural wine is a blend of three small plots of Pinot Noir in the village of Purbach grown on the west shores of lake Neusiedl in the north part of Burgenland. The vineyards are all closely surrounded by forest and therefore produce grapes with a fresh and light character. The soil is pure chalky limestone mixed with a variety of gneisz and glimmerschist towards the upper part of the vineyards. The grapes are pressed with minimum pressure after having been on skins for about 2 weeks with minimum extraction. The wine stays on full lees in large Austrian oak barrels for at least 10 months before being bottled without filtration, fining or added sulphur.
This Wine: A serious Pinot Noir from a serious winemaker. "Brutal" is an open-sourced label that some leading natural winemakers use to signify that a particular cuvvee is somewhat of an experiment.
Notes on the Winemaker: Christian Tschida is a 4th generation winemaker in the eastern part of Austria and is often seen as one of the leading figures in the world of natural wine. His signature approach to his craft involves incredibly light pressing of the grapes in order to extract only the best quality juice.
