Grape Variety: Blaufränkisch

Producer: Franz Weninger

Region: Horitschon, Austria

Certified Organic and Biodynamic

Wild Scale: 4/5

Vegan friendly wine

Winemaking: De-stemmed grapes from 30 year old vines are spontaneously fermented in stainless steel before being aged for a year in large, old oak barrels. No fining or filtration. Tiny amount of sulphur on bottling.

This Wine: One of our best sellers in the bar at Highbury Library in part thanks to its amazing value for money. Usually you would have to pay significantly higher for a wine of this quality but Franz once told us he manages to sell for such a great price because he spends no money on marketing and instead just lets the wine do the talking. Black cherry and forest fruits are accompanied perfectly by an earthiness and high acidity. Great to drink now or keep for a couple of years.

Notes on the Winemaker: Franz Weninger grew up in Burgenland, the region in East Austria that borders Hungary. He runs two wineries, one in each country using biodynamic techniques with a deep commitment to the environment. His wines offer outstanding value for such high quality.
