Grape Variety: Grenache Noir, Carignan
Producer: La Voluta
Region: Cucugnan, Roussillon, France
Wild Scale: 5/5
Vegan friendly wine
Winemaking: Organic (uncertified) grapes from 2 plots 300m above sea level were hand harvested. Carignan grapes were pressed directly and then whole buches of Grenache grapes were thrown into the juice to infuse for 4 days before all being pressed off. Aged in fibreglass with no racking. Bottled with no filtration, fining or added sulphur.
This Wine: A still, red natural wine (despite the crown cap) which is amazingly elegant for a red wine made from these varieties in this part of France. Deep black fruit but with a delicate perfumed floral character. Slight hint of sweetness making it a good pairing for food which has some sweetness also.
Notes on the Winemaker: La Voluta is the natural wine project of Jean Benoit Vivequain and Anna Rubio who now reside in the village of Cucugnan after meeting on the other side of the world in New Zealand where they were both learning about winemaking. They focus on old-vine Grenache Noir which is indigenous to the wild and rugged terrain between Cucugnan and Maury.
