Grape Variety: Mencia
Producer: Bodega La Senda (Diego Losada)
Region: El Bierzo, Castilla y León, Spain
Wild Scale: 4/5
Winemaking: Organic (uncertified) Mencia grapes come from a single plot on slate. Hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeast in chestnut barrel where it also ages for 11 months. No filtration, fining or added sulphur.
This Wine: A natural red wine that feels alive in the mouth. Bursting with red fruit and aromatics, an amazing expression of Bierzo terroir. The name refers to the river Acheron which in ancient Greek mythology was known as the river of woe! Happy drinking! Only 1370 bottles made.
Notes on the Winemaker: Diego Losada is very much an outsider in his hometown of Ponferrada in the North of Spain and this was the case even before winemaking. Now he creates wines that stand out amongst the crowd in Bierzo with authentic and true reflections of the region. We have visited him a couple of times to see his vineyards and help him in the winery, always to the soundtrack of Metallica!
