Winemaking: Organic Gamay grapes were harvested by hand. Whole bunch infusion and fermentation with indigenous yeast. Aged for 9 months in old oak barrels. Bottled with no filtration, fining or added sulphur.
This Wine: Natural red wine made with grapes from the Beaujolais appellations of Brouilly and Côte de Brouilly. Light to medium body with concentrated, bright fruit, a touch of integrated volatile acidity and an earthy underbelly. Great value and will keep getting better for a few years yet.
Notes on the Winemaker:
Romuald Valot worked with conventional winemakers in Burgundy for many years but craved to make wine in a more natural way. With this in mind, he bought a small plot of vines in a remote part of Beaujolais and took on a dogmatic approach to organic farming, sometimes not even pruning. In the cellar, all the cuvées are made with the carbonic maceration technique using whole bunches. The resulting wines are full of character and energy and strike a beautiful balance between simple and complex.
