Grape Variety: Gewurtztraminer
Producer: Domaine Rietsch
Region: Mittelbergheim, Alsace, France
Vegan friendly wine
Wild Scale: 3/5
Winemaking: Organic Gewurtztraminer grapes were harvested by hand. 2/3 of the grapes underwent a 19 day whole bunch maceration. Direct press for the remaining 1/3. Fermentation with indigenous yeast. Matured on the lees for 9 months in barrel. Bottled with no fining or filtration and just a tiny amount of sulphur on bottling.
This Wine: A beautiful and precise expression of the Gewurtztraminer grape with all its classic lychee and rose flavours but much more texture and balance than most. Fermented to dry.
Notes on the Winemaker: Jean-Pierre Rietsch is a natural winemaker in the village of Mittelbergheim, Alsace. His estate has been in the family for seven generations but wasn't used for vine cultivation until the 1970s. All of Jean-Pierre's wines are in very high demand but we particularly love his skin-contact cuvees which is a winemaking method rarely seen in Alsace.
