Grape Variety: Grenache, Syrah, Carignan
Producer: Clos des Jarres
Region: Minervois, Languedoc, France
Wild Scale: 4/5
Vegan friendly wine
Winemaking: Biodynamic Grenache, Syrah and Carignan grapes were harvested by hand. Fermented with indigenous yeast. Bottled with no filtration or fining and just a touch of sulphur.
This Wine: Full bodied red wine that still retains plenty of freshness and acidity. Ripe blackcurrant fruit with a hint of spice and a chalky, mineral finish. Best with food.
Notes on the Winemaker: I met Vivien Hemelsdael at a wine fair in 2018 and was impressed with the quality and value for money that his wines offer. They are honest reflections of the Minervois region where it can be difficult to find non-industrial wines now. We visited him to see the 12 hectares of land that he works with biodynamic faming practices and taste his wines in the cellar. He manages to retain freshness and balance which isn't always easy in this warm and dry part of France.
