Grape Variety: Mencia
Producer: Bodega La Senda (Diego Losada)
Region: El Bierzo, Castilla y León, Spain
Wild Scale: 3/5
Winemaking: Organic (uncertified) Mencia grapes come from a couple of different plots. Hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeast in chestnut barrel and aged for 11 months. No filtration, fining or added sulphur.
This Wine: A natural red wine with medium body and silky texture. Red fruit is the primary focus with a nice hint of earthiness underneath. The 2020 vintage is very clean and precise The name is a reference to Diego's favourite book and the fact he sometimes feels like he is living the story in the conservative surroundings of his town in the Bierzo valley.
Notes on the Winemaker: Diego Losada is very much an outsider in his hometown of Ponferrada in the North of Spain and this was the case even before winemaking. Now he creates wines that stand out amongst the crowd in Bierzo with authentic and true reflections of the region. We have visited him a couple of times to see his vineyards and help him in the winery, always to the soundtrack of Metallica!
