Merlot / Calladoc
Insouciance 2019
Clos des Jarres
Grape Variety: Merlot, Calladoc
Producer: Clos des Jarres
Region: Minervois, Languedoc, France
Wild Scale: 3/5
Vegan friendly wine
Winemaking: Biodynamic Merlot and Calladoc grapes were harvested by hand. Fermentation with wild yeast. Unfiltered and bottled with just a small amount of sulphur.
This Wine: It's from Minervois but don't expect a big, meaty red here. Vivien has managed to create something light and juicy that is BBQ ready. Fresh black fruit with a hint of spice. You can even have it slightly chilled.
Notes on the Winemaker: I met Vivien Hemelsdael at a wine fair in 2018 and was impressed with the quality and value for money that his wines offer. They are honest reflections of the Minervois region where it can be difficult to find non-industrial wines now. We visited him to see the 12 hectares of land that he works with biodynamic faming practices and taste his wines in the cellar. He manages to retain freshness and balance which isn't always easy in this warm and dry part of France.
