Grape Variety: Pinot Gris
Producer: Domaine Rietsch
Region: Mittelbergheim, Alsace, France
Vegan friendly wine
Wild Scale: 4/5
Winemaking: Organic Pinot Gris grapes grown on calcareous sandstone were harvested by hand. Whole bunch maceration for 14 days. Fermentation with indigenous yeast. Aged in old barrels on the lees for 9 months. No fining or filtration and just a tiny amount of sulphur on bottling.
This Wine: Technically an orange wine but drinks like a juicy light red as those Pinot Gris grapes have gone pink by the time they are harvested. Slides down easy!
Notes on the Winemaker: Jean-Pierre Rietsch is a natural winemaker in the village of Mittelbergheim, Alsace. His estate has been in the family for seven generations but wasn't used for vine cultivation until the 1970s. All of Jean-Pierre's wines are in very high demand but we particularly love his skin-contact cuvees which is a winemaking method rarely seen in Alsace.
