THE NIGHT IS NOW SOLD OUT IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING THE WAITLIST PLEASE EMAIL INFO@HIGHBURYLIBRARY.CO.UK OR BUY THE WINES AND READ ALONG AT HOME.
As always, we have teamed up with our good friends at Book Bar to bring you the book, as well as our matched wines.
You can choose between; a bundle which includes free attendance, a bundle with no attendance, or, simply purchase your ticket for the night by selecting 'no book / no wine / ticket & RBTW guide'.
On the night, Joanna will give an introduction to the wines and why they have been matched to the book. You have the option to purchase them by the glass - a great excuse to try them both! Emily will then kick start the conversation. We like to give everyone a chance to contribute, if they wish. It's a warm and friendly evening and we love getting to know everyone!
THE BEE STING by Paul Murray was Booker Prize shortlisted and winner of the Irish Book of the Year for 2023. This author is beloved in the literary sphere and has had lots of prize attention for various novels over the years, including for Skippy Dies which was praised as a triumph by authors such as Ali Smith and David Nicholls.
The Bee Sting is considered his best novel yet - the Daily Express called it ‘funny, angry and unputdownable’ and The Observer said that ‘it will fill your heart’. Murray is considered to be a master story teller, weaving humour into narratives that are otherwise pretty desperate and at times tragic.
Gavinol 5.0 2021
Grape Variety: Gamay
Producer: Olga Des Grottes
Region: Romain, Beaujolais, France
Wild Scale: 4/5
Vegan friendly wine
Winemaking: Organic Gamay grapes were harvested by hand and underwent 5 days whole bunch maceration. Short ageing in fibreglass tanks before bottling with no fining, filtration or added sulphur.
This Wine: Natural red wine that is light in body, "vin de soif" style. Loads of fresh red fruit but with some delicate floral notes. Will go down very quickly, especially if served slightly chilled.
Notes on the Winemaker: Olga Des Grottes is the sister of Romain des Grottes. She worked with various winemakers in Beaujolais and the Auvergne before getting her hands on 3 hectares of Gamay vines in the former.
Plan B 2022
Grape Variety: Muscaris, Souvignier Gris
Producer: Lillian & Sophie Bauchet
Region: Lancie, Beaujolais, France
Wild Scale: 3/5
Vegan friendly wine
Winemaking: Organic grapes were hand harvested and underwent direct press before fermentation in fibreglass with indigenous yeast. No fining, filtration or added sulphur.
This Wine: Natural white wine made from two hybrid grape varieties. This is clean and crisp with a pleasant density and silky texture.
Notes on the Winemaker: Sophie and Lillian Bauchet are natural winemakers located in Lancie, just south of the village of Fleurie in Beaujolais. They specialise in growing hybrid grape varieties that are more resistant to disease in the vineyard. This means less spraying of the vines which in turn leads to healthier soil. The couple are here to prove that these varieties can make wines just as interesting as those from more established names.
Find out why we have picked these wines to pair with THE BEE STING on the night or in our guide. We can’t wait to dip in and discuss with you. The bookclub will also mark the FIFTH BIRTHDAY for RBTW, so we will raise a glass in celebration with you all in person or if you’re reading along at home 🥳
