Grape Variety: Savagnin Rose
Producer: Domaine Rietsch
Region: Mittelbergheim, Alsace, France
Vegan friendly wine
Wild Scale: 3/5
Winemaking: Organic Savagnin grapes were harvested by hand. Matured on the lees for 9 months in barrel. Bottled with no fining or filtration and just a tiny amount of sulphur on bottling.
This Wine: Also known as Rot Traminer, Savagnin Rose is the non-aromatic relative to Gewurtztraminer. Despite being considered white grape, this wine is light pink in the glass due to the skin contact. The profile has a touch of lemon but is all about minerality and less about fruit.
Notes on the Winemaker: Jean-Pierre Rietsch is a natural winemaker in the village of Mittelbergheim, Alsace. His estate has been in the family for seven generations but wasn't used for vine cultivation until the 1970s. All of Jean-Pierre's wines are in very high demand but we particularly love his skin-contact cuvees which is a winemaking method rarely seen in Alsace.
