5 Natural Wine for Beginners

Natural wine can be a scary place for newcomers. Here is our selection of bottles to introduce you to this world without breaking the bank. Approachable and easy drinking styles that are still made with organic fruit and natural winemaking principles but don't rank too high on our wild scale.

Roig Boig 2023

Lets kick off with an iconic bottle in the world of natural wine from La Salada in Catalunya. Roig Boig means "Crazy Red" and it certainly felt pretty crazy when we first tasted many moons ago but now it feels very clean and approachable. What's changed? The wine or our palates? Either way, this is a great introduction for new drinkers as it combines 10 red and white grape varieties together to produce a light red / rosé packed with juicy fruit and fresh acidity. When in doubt...Roig Boig!

Splash 2023

The easiest of easy drinking! I could have put so many wines in this list from Chateau Barouillet because everything winemaker Vincent Alexis makes is such good value but I went with this white Pet Nat as it was a gateway wine to so many when it first came on to the scene. Low in alcohol, this is the perfect thirst quencher.

En Route Pour l'Apero 2024

For lots of conventional wine drinkers, all those fruity flavours synonymous with many natural wines can be a bit hard to take at first. If you crave a white wine with a more minerally character, then this is for you. Made with Jacquere grapes in the French alpine region of Savoie, this is low in alcohol and very easy drinking. Clocking in at just 2 on the wild scale, it's an undeniable crowdpleaser.

Ottavio Rube Bianco 2023

If you are ready to dip your tow into the world of orange wine, we have the perfect entry for you. Made with Cortese grapes that see just 3 days of skin contact, you will definitely notice a different texture than a white wine and with some subtle savoury notes but it certainly won't scare you off. Valli Unite are the masters at producing affordable natural wines and at just £20, you can't go wrong with this bottle.

1984 2023

Finally, a red wine from our good friend Diego at Bodega La Senda in the northern Spanish winemaking region of Bierzo. This is made from 100% Mencia grapes, which is the local speciality. Despite being produced entirely naturally and with no added sulphur, this is a clean, approachable bottle with a great balance of fruit and mineral notes that can work with or without food. You could even give it to your grandparents and I'm sure they would love it!
