New Skin Contact Wines from Gazzetta

In the north of Lazio around the shores of Lake Bolsena, Trish Nelson produces beautifully fresh natural wines from local varieties under her Gazzetta label. She hails from Australia and travelled the world to learn about winemaking before being inspired to set up here after working with Le Coste nearby. 

When it comes to grape varieties, the local hero in this region is Procanico. The name even translates from latin as 'prolific'! I always feel like this variety expresses restrained melon fruit aromas with a strong mineral character. Trish uses Procanico to great success both in blends and also in single varietal wines. 

We have received three new white cuvées, each with varying degrees of skin contact resulting in different styles. Here is a quick overview;

BIANCO TRILLI 2024

This is a blend of Vermentino and Procanico grapes with 3 days of skin contact. Just enough to impart a touch of colour and give the wine a delightful, fuzzy peach skin-like texture.  Low in alcohol, this is really refreshing with honeydew and mineral notes shining through on the palate. It was a big hit at our recent Wine Club.

BIANCO PEPPINO 2024

Made from a blend of Malvasia, Trebbiano and Procanico grapes, this is a slightly more aromatic and floral cuvée. Pushing the skin contact a little further with 5 days, you are treated to a bit more texture and some savoury, spicy notes. Still easy going and again only 10.5%, we will be serving this by the glass shortly in the bar at Highbury Library. 

BIANCO CASTAGNO 2022

With 4 weeks skin contact, this is the most intense and concentrated wine of the trio. Made from 100% Procanico grapes, you can expect complex layers of developed, dried stone fruits, minerals and a smoke. This is a more gastronomic cuvée, best enjoyed over a long meal.
