It's Electric! New arrivals from Sophie Evans and Leisure Wine

We are very excited to receive wines from a couple of our favourite domestic producers, Sophie Evans and Leisure Wine

For those still in need of an introduction to Sophie, she is one of the most exciting figures in the UK's emerging natural wine scene. She trained with 2Naturkinder in Germany before acquiring her own vines near Ashford in Kent where she undertook her first vintage in 2022. Production quantities are tiny and are often reduced further by the difficult climatic conditions she faces but the wines are always full of life and showcase her meticulous farming techniques and hands-off approach in the cellar.

Electric Field 2024

This is a white blend of Pinot Gris, Reichensteiner, Pinot Noir, Bacchus and Seyval Blanc, all the different varieties that Sophie grows. We can't really remember a wine that captures the aromas and flavours of the English countryside quite as vividly as this. Apples, elderflower and quince. Only 380 bottles produced.

Now on to our good friends Sam & Van who started their negotiant Leisure Wine project a few years back. They source grapes from around the UK with a long term plan to get their hands on their own vines. They have the remarkable ability to create unique and complex wines with varieties that many other winemakers struggle with. For the 2024 vintage they worked with organic Regent (red) and Reichensteiner (white) grapes grown in Sussex and have come up with two different expressions, both without any use of sulphur in the winemaking process.

We Danced the Cherry Tart Electric 2024

This is a 50/50 blend of the varieties which allows for fresh and bright wine that is best served slightly chilled. But this isn't just a juicy, glou glou wine. There are layers of complexity that unfold with subtle earthy and bitter notes that compliment the red fruit wonderfully.

Crushed in Dark like Soup of the Night 2024

Regent comes to the forefront of the blend here (70%) which opens up the darker side of the wine even further. Bitter leaves and beetroot with the fresh berries taking a back seat. A bit more structure than "We Danced..." but by no means overbearing.

Both were huge hits at our recent Wine Club tasting at Highbury Library so we look forward to introducing these cuvées to a wider audience whilst they last. Only a few hundred of each were made so don't hang around!
