Wine Club 028 Winner

The Beaujolais Nouveau Day wine club proved to be a great night! We tried 6 different Gamays made in a variety of contrasting styles and from different vintages.

In a Wine Club first, the bottle with highest number of winning votes also got the most losing votes. Just when you thought we had enough division in the world, natural wine delivers another blow! Qui l'Eût Cru 2022 is a wild number from Romuald Valot in Beaujolais. There's a touch of fizz, electric acidity and candied red fruit. Apparently, you'll love it or hate it!

Those looking for something more refined really enjoyed Le Baleine Ivre 2020 from La Derniere Goutte, also in Beaujolais. When we first drank this wine back in 2022, it was quite out there! We still really enjoyed it, but over time flavours have integrated and settled and now it's tasting quite serious. Darker and mineral notes have come to the fore and everyone seemed to appreciate this.

Trait Gamay 2021 was giving a similar expression despite coming from the Loire Valley on the opposite side of the country. Winemaker Remi Sédès doesn't use the classic Beaujolais carbonic maceration technique but still creates a light and delicate red wine with a brilliant intensity of fruit and minerals. Another great choice for those looking for precision.

At time of writing, we still have some bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau 2024 from Séléné in stock that also went down very well. People loved the crunchy red fruit flavours and easy drinking style. Definitely a bottle to enjoy with friends.

Finally, we drank another wine from Romuald Valot. Tromp l'Oeil 2023 is a white wine made from a direct press of Aligoté and Gamay. A Beaujolais Blanc de Noir if you will. With red fruit, Gamay aromas on the nose, the palate delivers a burst of citrus. Deceiving to the eye indeed!

Wine Cub will return in the new year. I hope to see you there soon...

Until then, Happy Drinking!
