Grape Variety: Viognier

Producer: Le Mazel (Gérald Oustric)

Region: Valvignères, Ardèche, France

Wild Scale: 5/5

Vegan friendly wine

Winemaking: Organic Viognier grapes from 25 year old vines (at the time) were harvested by hand. Pressed into stainless steel for fermentation with indigenous yeast and then aged in old barrels for 18 months. Bottled in 2007 with no fining, filtration or added sulphur.

This Wine: A very special wine from the early days of the domaine's history. A fully developed white wine with an intense smoked peach and apricot character. Round and rich with a full body, it feels like everything is perfectly in balance here.

Notes on the Winemaker: After meeting the famous Beaujolais producer Marcel Lapierre, Gérald Oustric realised it was time to stop selling grapes to the local co-cop in the Ardèche village of Valvignères and instead focus on making authentic wines with personality that reflect the natural environment of the vines. Now he is seen as one of the godfathers of the natural wine movement and his cuvées have the ability to age amazingly well.
