Grape Variety: Kéknyelü

Producer: Bencze Birtok

Region: Badacsony, Hungary

Wild Scale: 5/5

Winemaking:  Biodynamic Kéknyelü  grapes were harvested by hand and underwent a slow press in whole bunches before fermentation in amphora vessels where the wine was also aged for 9 months. No fining, filtration or added sulphur.

This Wine: White wine made from a rare Hungarian grape variety. It can be difficult to achieve the right quality in the grape so the winemaker only makes this in special years when conditions are perfect. This is medium to full bodied with a rich and ripe character. A very interesting wine, not too dissimilar to some wines made with Pinot Blanc. Best served with food. Only 1500 bottles produced.

Notes on the Winemaker: István Bencze is a pioneer of natural winemaking in Hungary. His vineyards are situated on the Szent György hill, in Badacsony near Lake Balaton. He works meticulously in the vineyard, harvesting at multiple times in order the achieve the right balance in the final wine.
