Grape Variety: Mencia

Producer: Bodega La Senda (Diego Losada)

Region: El Bierzo, Castilla y León, Spain

Wild Scale: 4/5

Winemaking: Organic (uncertified) Mencia grapes come from a single plot on slate. Hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeast in chestnut barrel where it also ages for 11 months. No filtration, fining or added sulphur.

This Wine: This wine is made from Diego's highest quality Mencia grapes, all taken from his best plot with the highest elevation. The result is medium bodied wine with delicate complexity and now with a bit of age, it's drinking better than ever. Wild cranberry, pomegranate and red cherry flavours combine with floral notes and a touch of black pepper. High acidity brings a real sense of energy. The name refers to the river Acheron which in ancient Greek mythology was known as the river of woe! Happy drinking!

Notes on the Winemaker: Diego Losada is very much an outsider in his hometown of Ponferrada in the North of Spain and this was the case even before winemaking. Now he creates wines that stand out amongst the crowd in Bierzo with authentic and true reflections of the region. We have visited him a couple of times to see his vineyards and help him in the winery, always to the soundtrack of Metallica!
