Winemaking: Organic Chenin Blanc grapes were hand harvested and underwent fermentation with indigenous yeast. No filtration, fining or added sulphur.
This Wine: Serious Chenin from a blend of 4 plots. 2023 was a cooler vintage which results in a leaner, zippier wine. Best served with food. Definitely an age-worthy wine.
Notes on the Winemaker: Mai and Kenji Hodgson are natural winemakers based in Rablay-sur-Layon in the Anjou region of France's Loire Valley. Meeting in Vancouver before studying enology in Japan, they eventually moved to France in 2009. Influenced by legendary Anjou natural vignerons like Olivier Cousin and Marc Angeli, they established their own tiny 4-hectare estate. Working organically with no synthetic inputs, they cultivate plots of old-vine Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Grolleau. In the cellar, their approach is completely hands off, relying on indigenous yeast with zero added sulphur, fining, or filtration. Their cuvées (such as Faia and Les Aussigouins) have achieved cult status, celebrated for their immense energy, mineral structure and ability to age.
