Region: Loire, France
Wild Scale: 3/5
Vegan friendly wine
Winemaking: Grapes from 30-80 year old vines were hand harvested and underwent fermentation with indigenous yeast. Bottled before fermentation Ancestral method (Pet Nat) winemaking techniques. Aged for 18 months before disgorgement. No added sulphur.
This Wine: A sparkling, light pink Pet Nat with a great balance of fruity and savoury characteristics. Complex and precise, this a great example of how serious and age-worthy Ancestral wines can be. Great by itself as an aperitif but also a versatile partner for food. A chance to taste a piece of natural wine history!
Notes on the Winemaker: Les Capriades was the project of Pascal Potaire and Moses Gadouche who produced only ancestral method sparkling wine (Pets Nats) from grapes grown by them or sourced from other farmers around the Loire Valley. Pascal had started making wine in the 1990s before setting up Les Capriades in 2005. He played a huge role in bringing the Pet Nat style back into vogue and championed meticulous winemaking (every bottle was disgorged by hand) in order to produce complex and age-worthy bottles. Sadly, the duo decided to go their separate ways and 2022 was their final vintage.
