Winemaking: Organic Carignan and Grenache grapes from 40 year old vines grown on sand and schist slopes were harvested and de-stemmed by hand. Macerated for 24 hours. Fermentation with indigenous yeast. Aged for 1 year in an old barrel. Bottled with no fining, filtration or added sulphur.
This Wine: Natural red wine with a medium body. A lovely depth of delicate, perfumed fruit alongside some darker plum and black olive notes. Acidity is dailled down but totally in balance. Elegant but rustic which is exactly how we like it. Only 399 bottles produced.
Notes on the Winemaker: Vinyer de la Ruca is a project that began when Tuscan native Manuel di Vecchia Staraz moved to the French Mediterranean town of Banyuls close to the Spanish border. He works out of the famous Neuf Cave cellar and produces beautiful wines that have earned a cult following in recent years. He enjoys blending different varieties and colours but also makes the traditional, sweet, red Banyuls style which is possibly the jewel in his crown.
