Winemaking: Organic Chardonnay grapes from vines grown on white and grey marl / clay soils that are over 30 years old were harvested by hand. Fermented with indigenous yeast in old oak barrels where the wine then aged on the lees for 10 months. No fining, filtration or added sulphur.
This Wine: Natural white Burgundy from the village of Martailly-lès-Brancion. Green apple, lemon and subtle almond notes are balanced with fresh acidity and a mineral backbone. One of Julien's most approachable cuvées in youth. Only 3200 bottles produced.
Notes on the Winemaker: Clos des Vignes du Maynes was founded in 1954 on land that had been used by monks for viticulture since the year 910. Pierre and Jeanne Guillot immediately worked organically in the vineyard and without use of sulphur in the cellar. Their son Julien joined the project in 1998 and they transitioned to biodynamic farming. Now they work around 8 hectares on clay-limestone soils where they cultivate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay grapes to produce Burgundian wines of real purity that focus on fruit and not flavours of wood!
