Pivoine Rouge 2021
Grape Variety: Côt (Malbec)
Producer: Hervé Villemade
Region: Touraine, Loire, France
Wild Scale: 3/5
Vegan friendly wine
Winemaking: Organic Côt grapes were harvested by hand. Fermentation with indigenous yeast in a combination of amphora vessels and stainless steel tanks where the wine also aged. No fining or filtration and just a small amount of sulphur added at bottling.
This Wine: A really delicate and sophisticated expression of the Cot grape variety (the local name for Malbec). The amphora ageing has provided a beautiful soft texture to the wine. Herbal and peppery aromas alongside a fresh red and black fruit profile. Excellent value for a fine with such finesse.
Notes on the Winemaker: Hervé Villemade has been making natural wine in the Loire valley since the late 1990s after being inspired by the Beaujolais legend Marcel Lapierre. He is situated close to Thierry Puzelat / Clos du Tue-Boeuf and just like his neighbour, produces stunning wines from local grape varieties at very reasonable prices.
