Winemaking: Organic Pineau d'Aunis grapes were sourced from a neighbour and added to Gamay grapes from the Villemade estate. Direct press before fermentation with indigenous yeast in stainless steel tanks. Aged in old barrels. No fining or filtration and just a small amount of sulphur added at bottling.
This Wine: Great value natural rosé from an underrated producer in the Loire valley. Salmon pink in the glass with red fruit and subtle spice. Easy going but with a lovely concentration.
Notes on the Winemaker: Hervé Villemade has been making natural wine in the Loire valley since the late 1990s after being inspired by the Beaujolais legend Marcel Lapierre. He is situated close to Thierry Puzelat / Clos du Tue-Boeuf and just like his neighbour, produces stunning wines from local grape varieties at very reasonable prices.
