Winemaking: Organic grapes from different plots of 50 year old vines were harvested by hand. Whole bunch fermentation with indigenous yeast in stainless steel tanks. Aged in a combination of old oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Aged in barrels. Bottled with no fining, filtration or added sulphur.
This Wine: La Luna Rouge is now an iconic cuvée from this part of France. Made from a combination of many different plots around the town of Banyuls, this is a light and juicy red wine by southern French standards, lifted by the addition of some white juice and the employment of gentle extraction techniques. Elegant but with a rustic edge, you can expect soft tannins and flavours of dark fruit, spices and a subtle hint of smoke and Mediterranean herbs. Great with or without food.
Notes on the Winemaker: Bruno Duchêne hails from the north of France but moved south just after the turn of the century in order to realise his winemaking dream. He farms old vines of indigenous grape varieties on steep, terraced slopes in the vicinity of the picturesque Mediterranean town of Banyuls-sur-Mer. You can feel the sea's influence as it brings freshness to his wines and balances out the ripe fruit that the sun in this part of France inevitably produces.
