Winemaking: Organic Pineau d'Aunis grapes from vines planted in the late 1940s were harvested by hand. Semi-carbonc maceration in whole bunches. Fermentation with indigenous yeast in cement tanks. Aged in fibre glass. No fining, filtration or added sulphur.
This Wine: Natural red wine with a light body and high acidity. This is an excellent expression of the local Pineau d'Aunis grape variety, possibly becuase it comes from such old vines. Great concentration of black cherry fruit with a hint of red apple skin followed by black pepper and liquorice. We only received a handful of bottles so don't hang around.
Notes on the Winemaker: In 1988, Christian Venier began working 7 hectares of vines in the Cheverny appealltion of the Loire valley. He is cousin of Thierry Puzelat / Clos du Tue-Boeuf who is located near by. Christian's wines are precise but full of character thanks to his meticulous work in the vineyard and hands-off approach in the cellar.
