Winemaking: In January 2024 we travelled to Bierzo to blend a wine with Diego. We tried many different barrels before deciding on our favourite combination. 50% of the wine is made up of a barrel of every grape variety that Diego harvested in 2021 (both red and white), the other 50% is a barrel of red Mencia juice that usually goes into the 1984 cuvée. All grapes farmed organically, fermentation with indigenous yeast, ageing in old barrels and no filtration, fining or added sulphur.
This Wine: Dedicated to Mikel Arteta who was born not too far from where the grapes were grown, DESGRACIA! is a juicy blend of 7 red and white grapes varieties harvested across two different vintages. You can expect red cherries, cranberries and an earthy, mineral note. Great swerved slightly chilled. Only 300 bottles produced, all numbered by hand. Label designed by 1886.
Notes on the Winemaker: Diego Losada is very much an outsider in his hometown of Ponferrada in the North of Spain and this was the case even before winemaking. Now he creates wines that stand out amongst the crowd in Bierzo with authentic and true reflections of the region. We have visited him a couple of times to see his vineyards and help him in the winery, always to the soundtrack of Metallica!
