Winemaking: Organic Riesling grapes from a very small (0.2 hectare) plot on the Grand Cru vineyards of Moenchberg were hand harvested. Direct press and fermentation in stainless steel with indigenous yeast before being aged in large old oak barrels. No filtration, fining or added sulphur.
This Wine: This is the first vintage that Yann has made this particular grand cru Riesling with no filtration or added sulphur. The result is a very pure, mineral driven wine with citrus fruit flavours and high acidity. This is drinking very well now but will get so much better with time (at least 3 years) so save it if you can resist opening. The Moenchberg name means Monk's Hill in Alsatian and you can see a statue of a monk over looking these vineyards near the village of Eichhoffen.
Notes on the Winemaker: The Durrmann family make wine in the village of Andlau on the slopes of Vosges mountains in Alsace. The vineyards have been organic since 1998 and sulphur free cuvees have been produced since 2007 after Yann (the son) took over running the winery.
