Tempranillo / Viura (Rioja)
Grape: 85% Tempranillo, 15% Viura (Macabeo)
Producer: El Mozo
Region: Rioja Alavesa, Spain
Wild Scale: 2/5
Winemaking: Organic Tempranillo and Viura grapes were hand harvested and underwent carbonic maceration (fermentation with indigenous yeast). Lightly filtered and fined (vegan friendly), sulphur on bottling.
This Wine: Organic Rioja that is great for everyday drinking. Medium bodied and dry. The carbonic maceration winemaking process and the fact there is some white juice included makes this a lighter and easier style of Rioja.
Notes on the Winemaker: El Mozo is the natural winemaking project of Gorka and Itxaso who both hail from families with viticultural history in Rioja. The pair took over Ixtaso's family winery in 2010 and steered it away from industrialisation that had been happening in the region for many years. They now create artisan Rioja wines, not something easy to find.
