In Absentia 2022
La Senda
Grape Variety: Trousseau
Producer: Bodega La Senda (Diego Losada)
Region: El Bierzo, Castilla y León, Spain
Wild Scale: 3/5
Winemaking: Trousseau grapes from old bush vines were harvested by hand. Crushed and macerated for 4 to 5 days. Fermented in chestnut vessels and aged for 22 months in old french oak barrels. No fining, filtration or added sulphur.
This Wine: Natural red wine with light to medium body. Delicate but concentrated with spicy notes that compliment the dark fruit and bright acidity. Diego is now ageing his wines longer which results in greater balance and complexity, all of which is on display here.
Notes on the Winemaker: Diego Losada is very much an outsider in his hometown of Ponferrada in the North of Spain and this was the case even before winemaking. Now he creates wines that stand out amongst the crowd in Bierzo with authentic and true reflections of the region. We have visited him a couple of times to see his vineyards and help him in the winery, always to the soundtrack of Metallica!
