New Alsatian Energy from Yann Durrmann

After 10 years of championing the wines of Yann Durrmann, they probably do not need an introduction at this point. But if you are one of the lucky ones that has yet to experience the joy of opening one of these bottles, then here is a quick introduction.

Based in the village of Andlau in northern Alsace, the Durrmann family transitioned to organic farming in 1998 and began to they treat their vineyards as self-sustaining ecosystems, allowing sheep to graze between the vines during winter and maintaining trees within the plots to foster biodiversity.

In 2007, Yann began taking over the reigns from his parents and slowly started embracing winemaking techniques that were completely free of sulphur use which proved to be wildly successful. In London, demand went through the roof around lockdown when a new audience began discovering the domaine, partly thanks to how well priced the cuvées were and still are today.

A fresh delivery from Andlau has just hit the shop so here is a breakdown of the new Durrmann wines now available, spanning everyday drinkers, mineral-driven terroir studies, and Grand Cru Rieslings

The Everyday Chuggers

Ron-Rond le Litron Rouge 2025 (1L) — £30

Varieties: 50% Pinot Noir, 50% Pinot Gris

Wild Scale: 4/5

Packed into a full 1 litre bottle, this is a joyous wine that bursts with bright red fruits, wild flowers, and a hint of spice. Perfectly suited when you are hanging out with friends and also a recent winner at Highbury Library Wine Club.

Sylvaner Nature 2025 — £25

Variety: Sylvaner

Wild Scale: 4/5

Sylvaner often gets overlooked in Alsace, but Yann Durrmann gives it the spotlight it deserves. Unfiltered and bottled with zero additives, this is snappy, textured, and brimming with green apple, lemon verbena, and a fun, rustic edge.

Rouge Gorge 2025 — £28

Variety: Pinot Noir

Wild Scale: 4/5

Made with negotiant grapes, this is light-bodied, silky, and energetic with notes of crushed cranberries, pomegranate, and subtle earthy minerals. Serve it cool alongside charcuterie or roast chicken.

Terroir and Soil Studies

Yann is a master at showcasing how Alsace’s complex geology translates into the glass. These three dry Rieslings offer a fascinating side-by-side tasting of different soil compositions:

Sur Calcaire 2024 — £30

Variety: Riesling

Soil: Limestone

Grown on limestone soils, Sur Calcaire is rich and rounded with ripe citrus, stone fruit, and a soft, mouth-watering acidity

Sur Schistes Rabbari 2024 — £31

Variety: Riesling

Soil: Schist

Grown on dark schist soils, this cuvée brings razor-sharp tension, gunflint smoke, and mineral power. Linear, precise, and incredibly vibrant.

KRAX 2025 — £30

Variety: Riesling

Wild Scale: 4/5

Named after the granite-rich Crax plot, this Riesling is full of high-wire energy, pithy citrus skin, and a long, saline finish.

Grand Cru Wiebelsberg 2024 — £40

Variety: Riesling

Soil: Pink Sandstone (Grès de Vosges)

Wiebelsberg is famous for its steep, south-facing slopes of pink sandstone. This wine is elegant and fragrant with notes of candied lemon peel, white flowers, and a seamless, silky texture.

Grand Cru Kastelberg 2023 — £44

Variety: Riesling

Soil: Steige Slate / Black Schist

Kastelberg is one of the rare sites in Alsace on dark slate. It produces profoundly powerful, age-worthy Rieslings with deep mineral drive, incredible weight, and soaring acidity.
