TASTING NOTES MIXTAPE 2 by Rey
For the second outing of our new monthly mixtape series, DJ, musician, hospitality writer, Highbury Library assistant manager and all round great guy Rey Day takes us on a musical journey to accompany a bottle of Leisure Wine's "I Saw Custard Creams Fall Like Lightning"
Rey has been championing the music he loves on grassroots radio for a few years and his latest show Psychedelicatessen on Voices Radio that digs into the sonic textures of the 60s and 70s. He's also one half of the production duo Jaan (@jaansound), which combines studio experimentation and song craft to create heady and organic electronic music.
He grew up in a music obsessed family who made their musical loves clear to him. He was already into the likes of Eno's Music for Airports, Radiohead's Kid A, Kruder & Dorfmeister's K&D sessions and Ry Cooder's Paris Texas soundtrack from a very young age. These are just a few of the records that have influenced his approach to music throughout his life, and which have influenced this playlist.
His selections in his own words;
"I took inspiration from I Saw Custard Creams Fall Like Lightning's surrealistic and Dali-esque name, its silky, creamy texture and its distant sparkle of acidity. Featuring reverb-drenched waves of dream-pop, ambient soundscapes, glitchy downtempo, impressionistic electronica, shimmering cosmic jazz and tripped out prog. Shuffle off!"
