Legends of the Languedoc: Jeff Coutelou
We have just received some very exciting wines from Jeff Coutelou in the Languedoc which finally gives me an excuse to post these photos from early 2024 of what was one of my favourite winemaker visits ever.
Jean-François Coutelou (Jeff to his friends) is one of the undisputed pioneers of the European natural wine movement. Operating from his family domain, Mas Coutelou, in Puimisson near Beziers in the Languedoc, Jeff was way ahead of the curve, converting his vineyards to certified organic farming back in 1987.
Renowned for his deeply ecological approach, he treats his vineyards as a biodiverse sanctuary, even cultivating a specialised nursery to save rare, historical Mediterranean grape varieties from extinction. His radical commitment to low-intervention winemaking hasn't always won over traditionalist neighbours; Jeff was famously featured in the Netflix documentary series Rotten ("Reign of Terroir"), which highlighted the dark side of local tension and corporate wine culture, including shocking instances where his vines were deliberately sabotaged and poisoned by disgruntled, anonymous figures.
In the cellar, Jeff remains a pure minimalist: no added sulphur, no commercial yeast, and no heavy filtering. The results are vibrant, light-footed, and intensely expressive natural wines that showcase the joyful, unadulterated side of southern France. His warmth, generosity, and uncompromising dedication have earned him a cult following among natural wine lovers worldwide, including us!
Our obsession with his wines began back in 2013 when I purchased a bottle of his iconic Classe cuvée, before I even knew what natural wine was. Fast forward a decade to the 2024 trip to his domain which sealed his status as one of my absolute favourites. Wandering past fermenting tanks into a secret backroom packed with aging barrels and historic demijohns of vintage spirits, Jeff’s boundless energy and deep craft came alive. A unforgettable moment with a true legend, even if I was suffering from minor bout food poisoning at the time.

Here is a brief overview of the wines that have just arrived
Souaf! Souaf! 2024
True to its name, this is a bright, energetic, and highly drinkable 'vin de soif'. The Mourvèdre and Cinsault grapes provide a juicy backbone, while a touch of Muscat adds a floral, aromatic lift on the nose. Chilled red fans will love.
Sauve Qui Pleut 2025
Now in just its second vintage, this unique offering from Jeff utilises a plot of Xarel·lo grapes that he planted himself just a few years ago. The variety is famous as the most noble ingredient of the Cava blend in Catalunya but now you can experience the Coutelou take which results in a vibrant white wine with stony minerality, citrus freshness, and textured herbal complexity.
Rome 2023
A fascinating co-fermented field blend incorporating both red and white grape varieties. It's medium-bodied, complex, and expressive, bursting with fresh Mediterranean herbs, wild dark fruit, gentle spice, and an inviting, soft floral fragrance from the white grapes in the mix. I drank a bottle last week and was captivated!
OW 2024
Orange wine in its most elegant and complex form! Made from organic Muscat grapes left on the skins to extract colour and texture, it balances rich aromatic notes of orange blossom, stone fruit, and tea leaves with a dry, gripping finish.
Lots to explore!
Happy drinking
